Powder Room

There is a small downstairs power room that needed a little help. It was not part of the original design, but was added shortly after the house was completed.

This is it:

Here's the new plan:

Not that much different. Added a corner sink, and pulled the toilet out so it would not be right under the stairs.

Yes, we are planning on some wild wall paper in that room. It can take it.

You can see the toilet is moved up some

and finally:

Not the most exciting room in the house. But it is the Great Convenience.

We will be keeping the floor:

Here's a better look:

And that opens to the foyer, where the tile looks like this:

and the steps up to the living room, made of Kasota limestone:

With my foot, for scale.

Butler's Pantry

Two other areas that we will be updating downstairs will be the Butler's Pantry (you can see it in some of the drawings below) and the Powder Room. (The powder room was added after the house was finished, at the behest of Mrs Bogk. Frank complied)

As a reminder, here is the Butler's Pantry:

Here are some photos:

And here's the new design. Pretty much the same as the old design, but with new cabinets:

We're keeping the sink. It is a really deep sink.

We will use this as a real pantry, as we are giving up some cabinet space in the kitchen. We will also use it for staging for dinner, and maybe I will get another fancy espresso machine that I will put here. Time will tell.

There is a window in this space, which is nice. Always nice to get some natural light inside.

I will leave this here for now. Powder Room later. Then I don't know if I will go upstairs or look at the rug details.

New Kitchen Design

I'll start this by saying that nothing is ever final until you see it in real life. But we have come to a set of drawings that are going to the contractor for bidding. So I guess it does not get any better than that.

First, a layout of the existing kitchen (ignore the demo notes):

This does not show the kitchen table that extends out (from right to left) from the closet (the dotted lines) into about where the word "kitchen" is. You can see it below (look at the blue shadow)

That is a laser scan of the kitchen.

Here is the new layout, plan view:

We are reworking the kitchen to reflect modern appliances (induction cooktop, dual ovens) yet keeping as many of the original elements as possible (Tennessee Marble counter, reusing the sconces, keeping the Berlin (Cherokee) Red Linoleum floor.)

We've also added an island, removed a coat closet, and removed the TAA designed light fixtures from between the windows.

Here is a view looking North, at the main sink and the wall of windows:

Here is a photo of the existing kitchen:

We're removing the fur down you see above the refrigerator. And the table I mentioned above is visible in the lower part of the table.

The new plan, looking West:

Note that we've removed the door. The range hood is above the cooktop (of course!)

The current image:

The new cooktop will be a bit to the right of the current range, and we'll add counter space to the left of the cooktop. While this is not a huge kitchen, we will make sure we have plenty of counter space, as well as drawers and cabinets.

This is looking South (on the left of the image above):

Ovens, refrigerator, and some cabinets. As well as access to the clothes chute (as long as the AC doesn't need it for a return!)

This is what it looks like now:

We are keeping the chalkboard, but will probably move it to the basement.

Here's the island:

Nothing to compare it to. It should help with the way we cook.

We don't have the final lighting plan, but we will have something like this:

over the island. Again, nothing to compare it to now. The kitchen is under-lit by modern standards.

Here is the original light for the Dining Room ceiling:

I have another photo from the Avery Library at Columbia, but with too many reflections. I will try to enhance it. But you can see the theme of the house (90° angles, squares) reflected in this fixture.

In 3D:

and a 3D view of the kitchen:

Next up - Pantry and Powder room.
